WAHM Interview With Simply Wrapd

The WAHM Interviews will now be a weekly event for The WAHM Blog. I am hoping this will inspire women in business to learn what other moms in business have to say….

I recently had the opportunity to talk with Kimberlie Peeler, the Mompreneur behind Simply Wrapd. Kimberlie is a busy mom of 4 boys, ages 11, 8, 6, and 3, whom runs her own home based business and has for almost a year.

Kimberlie is very creative in her designs, as you will see with some of her products!

I conducted an email interview with Kimberly this week and here is what she had to say in response to the questions we asked her about her life and business!

Interview…

Before starting your business, what did you do for a living? For years I was in the retail industry before becoming a stay at home mom for the last 7 years.

How long have you been in business? It will be 1 year in January

What type/types of products or services do you offer? I offer customized party favors, such as candy wrappers, magnets, favor bags, as well as invitations. I will soon be offering custom note cards as well.

Why did you decide to start this business? I wanted to find a job that works great with being able to stay at home, and I would have fun doing.

What did it cost you to get your business started? About $500 because I already owned a computer and printer.

What do you enjoy most about your business? I love being able to create something that people say “That’s exactly what I was looking for!” Everyone loves to go to events and see what kind of party favors they will have. I enjoy having the customer be proud of what they have picked out.

How many hours a week do you invest in your business? It really doesn’t take a whole lot of time once you have a web site up, so I’m guessing I spend about 10 hours a week designing new items and researching whatever new fad brides and kids are into.

Is your family involved with your business? If so, how do they help? My kids like to help out be eating whatever left over candy there might be.

What has been your best marketing method? The Yahoo and google ad words have worked the best for me, but I also make sure to have my site listed on bridal sites, blogs, and of course at the bottom of my emails.

What have you found to be the most challenging part of being a home business owner? I am a small business so it is hard to try and compete with big business that do the same thing, because they can afford to aggressively tackle the marketing method. I think some people have an opinion as to the quality of work of mom owned business, when really I believe it to be much better. I’m able to provide a more personal ordering process with the customer letting them see what their order will look like , and making any necessary changes until it’s just perfect.

Where do you see your business in 5 years? I would love to be able to see my products in stores or even have my own store.

Do you have any advice for other work at home moms? Look at what kind of home business are out there that can be done from the home, narrow them down to the ones you have an interest in, i.e…scrapbooking, cooking, crafting etc. From there do the research as the costs it would take to start and maintain the business, look at other websites of the same interest and ask questions to those owners and see what they have gone through to get where they are. The money isn’t going to appear over night, remember the first year of business is always the hardest.
