Social Networks..How many are necessary?

social_networks.jpgWith social networking on the rise and new social networks popping out of the woodwork’s, I can not help but wonder how many social networks do we really need to utilize. For people like me who use social networks to promote a business, it seems like I bump into allot of the same names on each social network.

There are social networks for parents, moms, home business owners, direct sellers, bloggers, internet marketers, designers, pet lovers and even web 2.0 Guru’s. Almost anything you can think of, there is a social network for.

Since joining twitter, I have come across several bloggers I met on Facebook, and on Facebook found several people I have been networking with on MySpace. Now I have meet many contacts on each social network that I did not find on the others (unless I just have yet to see them there too).

I mean how many social networks can one person participate in and actually be on a meaningful level. By that I mean how many networks can one person actually contribute too. The networks I belong too, I like to interact with members by answering questions, posting information others may find helpful, ect. But there are only 24 hours in a day.

Let me share with you some of the social networks I am on…

Now, that is just a few of the ones I am a member of. I have never used any of the big name social networks such as LinedIn, Bebo, Plaxo, Plurk. It is not possible to network on each of those daily, for me at least.

So, what I want to know is…

How many social networks do you use?

Do you think we should be on every social network we can find or how many do you think someone really needs to utilize?

Twitter..My new Twitter Venture

twitter_logo.jpgAfter all of the Twitter buzz, I decided to finally head over to Twitter and open an account to see what all the talk is about. I was not really aware of the benefits of using Twitter and really did not see many benefits of using it. You can find me on my Twitter Profile.

Since starting to Twitter, I have finally started to see the benefits of using Twitter.

  • I have started networking with other bloggers, some I did not even know of!
  • I have found Twitter to be a great way drive traffic to this blog.

Now, since I am a Twitter newbie, I am sure I will realize more benefits as time goes on. I joined Twitter to test the waters you could say and see what the hype is all about and have actually grown to like it.

It seems like everyone who uses Twitter, uses it differently. Some use it to keep everyone updated on the latest news, others to show off blogs they enjoy and some to keep up with fellow bloggers and blog posts.

I guess my main goal right now, would be to keep up! Some people Tweet many times a day, where I do often forget all about it. I have been trying to keep up with everyone I am following and my own follwoers.

Sine this blog covers ways to make more money with your business online, it appeals to a wide target audience. Anyone with a home business is always looking for ways to use the internet to grow their business, weather it be internet marketers, direct sales reps, online boutique owners, or auction sellers. So, I have a huge market I can network with and benefit from.

My Twitter goal is to introduce this blog to 5 new people a day. It may not sound like allot but if 5 new people find my blog a day that is 150 new readers in a month that has 30 days. Those 150 new readers, may be ones I may have never had the opportunity to meet.

I will continue to use Twitter to grow my network and see where it takes me as I learn how to use it better, I will post a follow up in a few weeks! For those of you on Twitter, feel free to follow me!

What do you think about Twitter? For those of you using Twitter, do you have any tips to make using Twitter more beneficial? What is your reason for using or not using twitter?

MySpace Social Networking Tips

myspace.gifA few weeks ago, I wrote about using MySpace as a social networking tool. I got many replies from people who use MySpace and others who just hate it.

After allowing myself a few weeks to use it as a social network and test the waters, I must say I think MySpace is just as great of a tool as FaceBook. For the last month I have worked to connect with fellow home business owners and wahm’s. Not to mention, I joined some groups and participate in conversations.

I was able to connect with many people who like me, are business minded and open to learning new ways to market their business. So, my trial worked, the traffic picked up here, I have had many inquiries about advertising, and have got to chat with some great people in the home business field.

If you are not using MySpace as a professional tool, I highly recommend you give it a try. You have nothing to lose as it does not cost anything to use the social network.

I do have some great pointers for MySpace users, who want to use it for business.

  1. Do not go overboard with your layout. You may think it is cute to have glitters every where and music, but a professional or business minded individual interested in your products or service is not going to find it amusing. Your profile is representing your business, so keep that in mind while selecting a MySpace layout to use.
  2. Have 2 MySpace accounts. One for business and one for family & friends. Make your business profile professional and do what you wish with your personal one.
  3. Keep it personal. Take the time to email people who add you as a friend, let them know a bit about you and encourage networking together. When people realize you are a real person, not just a spammer, they will want to talk with you to learn more.
  4. Do not add to may graphics. You want your profile on MySpace to load fast. The more you add, the slower it will load. Many people will not wait around to see what you can offer. (I admit, slow loading profiles tick me off, and I leave)
  5. Create your own group. Create a group on a topic you are interested in. Others will join and open the doors to more networking for your business.

Keep in mind while using MySpace as a social networking tool that you want to attract like-minded individuals.
